Case Study: Nicholsons Sealing Technology – Factory Extension

Background

Nicholsons are global specialists in the design and manufacture of high temperature metal seals, gaskets and ancillary components for the aerospace, automotive, turbocharger, oil and gas, power generation and process industry sectors. Nicholsons factory is situated in Greencroft Industrial Park, Annfield Plain DH9 7YE.

As part of Nicholsons long term growth strategy they wished to expand their existing factory to increase capacity.

Project Description

Elvet Chartered Surveyors had previously worked with Nicholsons on their previous extension scheme, which was a two-storey extension that cost circa £1m to build in 2017.

Following the completion of the extension in 2017 there was no further opportunity to extend the existing facility within the grounds; however, an existing section could be modernised to increase the useable space with the introduction of a new mezzanine level (346m2) connecting to the extension completed in 2017.

Elvet Chartered Surveyors were engaged to undertake the initial tender exercise to select an experience contractor to complete the works. This involved working closely with the design team, which included Milbank Architects, Portland Consulting and neeco to prepare the tender package.

STP Construction were selected to undertake the works following a tender evaluation process. Elvet Chartered Surveyors were retained by the client to provide quantity surveying support during the construction period.

The project commenced in March 2018 and Practical Completion was achieved by November 2018.
